Eric 'RicStar' Winter

For the past 3 days I was a camp counselor at the Eric 'RicStar' Winter Music Therapy Camp!  This camp is a day camp that provides opportunities for musical expression, enjoyment, and interaction for all persons with special needs and their siblings.  Upon arrival, I was put into the "green group", which consisted of 5-10 year old campers.  The campers varied in age from toddlers to elderly!  We each got a buddy to be paired up with to watch.  Since this camp is a little bit different than an average camp, each camper was paired up with someone to help them with staying focused, take them on sensory breaks, help them eat lunch, assist with toileting, etc.  I got buddied up with the cutest little boy ever!  Loved him.  This camp was definitely one of the greatest things I have ever done and I already am looking forward to participating again.  What a great group of people who lead this camp!!!  This all began with Eric Winter, who was born with cerebral palsy and ever since discovering music he continued to advance until he got to a point where he was composing his own music.  Unfortunately, he unexpectedly died at the age of 12.  His parents decided to do what they though Eric would have wanted with the money they received in donations after his death: start a music therapy camp for other individuals with special needs to be able to express themselves through music.  I though it was so great, and I think it is awesome that all the amazing parents got a break for a few days as well.

My buddy for the week!
