WOW. It's over. The house is complete, fiesta has been fun, goodbyes have been made.
Easily one of the saddest days I have had in quite some time and I am confident I will cherish this for the rest of my life. The day began with breakfast earlier than usual, then we headed to the worksite to finish the house! The doors needed to be put in, we needed to finish putting up the walls, and we used our remaining fundraiser money to paint the inside and outside of the house 2 different shades of blue. Jenn (student), Norman (Panorama staff), and myself went to buy a beautiful front door at the market right after lunch. And oh my goodness it was about 10 degrees warmer there! Haiti, my favorite little girl fell asleep in my arms twice today... Cried out my name... And is just way too cute. The kids were all so cute today too because they used their own clothes to clean our cars with their dirty water and soap! Ugh, love them. So around 8:15 pm we finished the house. Then, we got out a Hello Kitty piñata almost the size of my body to hang on the beams inside the house, and brought out pizza and pop for everyone! Every child had about 3 slices of pizza in their hands at a time. While it was extremely depressing seeing these kids DEVOUR the food, I am so happy we were able to do a party in celebration of their complete house. They went NUTS with the piñata, even the adults. Shoveling candy into their shirts. After the food, the mother of the house gathered in a circle with her sisters to give thanks to us and say a prayer over us for safe travels. The start of the prayers all the way to the end when all the kids came around giving huge hugs and kisses the cheek for goodbyes made it all so so so so so hard! After we left the site, we had to hurry and go to our Mayan Hut reservation. We were already over an hour late. We went a couple miles away to this Mayan medicine man's home where he had a Mayan Sweat Hut. Coolest thing ever. All 13 of us in this LITTLE hut. The man would shovel volcanic rock into the pit in the middle of the hut, then he would spray water on it and put herbs, like basil on it. It all smelled and felt so good. We could get out at any time to get some fresh air or shower, and there was mud to put on! I feel so clean now! Tomorrow we leave :(
