So I went into my internship today a bit skeptical. I wasn't so sure about it two weeks ago when I went because I didn't learn much and this rehab center is all about... HANDS!! Which, I find boring. oops. BUT. Today, the OTs were much nicer to me and actually talked to me about what was going on! I was able to see a diabetic mans 2 fingers (he had to have his pointer, middle, and ring finger amputed as a result of the diabetes). This is terrible. Can you imagine having only a pinky and thumb on your dominant hand? Because I most definitely can not. On the plus side, he is being fitted for a hand prosthetic that will be similar to a glove with 3 fingers. The prosthetist will then be able to paint the gloves his exact skin tone and he will be able to use his thumb to hold things against his prosthetic fingers which is awesome. I was also able to see some muscle stimulation, hand massages (MANY), xrays of people with broken fingers, annndddd a patient who had recently had finger surgery. Unfortunately her body is healing TOO much, so the wound on her finger will not close as a result of the excessive healing, that's when you must put silver nitrate on it (looks like a match stick) which sort of burns the area to help the body close the wound, which only does this temporarily so more surgeries to come for this lady! It reminded me of getting my nose cauterized if anyone has ever had that done. Gross. Plus a new eval for a work comp patient! I never really thought about how many factory jobs are out there and how poorly the ergonomics are in the plants! So so so many work comp patients are in my future!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Thursday!
thats so crazy!! wow im impressed with you. i remember when you had that done to your nose!! ouch!
