As a future health care professional, I have been aware of
the harmful effects of tattoos on a person’s body when working in the health
care industry, as well as the ability to find work as a result of visible tattoos. In my line of work as an occupational
therapist, I will be working with the baby boomer population daily. The baby boomer population, like my
grandparents, is very traditional.
While some may have tattoos, like my grandpa’s, which features his name,
“Terry”, on his bicep, most frown upon the idea of applying permanent ink deep
into the skin. It is important for
me to present myself professionally in my future profession, and for that
reason I believe it is not only important to not have any tattoos visible while
working, but to also have the resources available to remove any tattoos safely
and effectively.
However as someone who appreciates all forms of art, I can
appreciate tattoos and their place in peoples' lives. Tattoos are works of art on the most popular canvas: the
human body. Over a person's
lifetime a person may see, or be seen by hundreds of thousands of people, and
if they have a visible tattoo that tattoo may be seen by quite a large number
of people, and many people proudly display their tattoos either as works of
art, or as symbolic meanings of their own life, such as the name of their
children, siblings, family members or the deceased. Tattoos can represent a
wide array of symbolic, and historical meaning.
While the concept of tattoos have been around for centuries
and used for a variety of different reasons, I think it is great that
technology continues to advance in order to create such opportunities for
people who regret decisions of the past.
